We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Group Accountant to join our Finance team in Haywards Heath, West Sussex on a Fixed Term Contract for up to 1 year.

Leading in the development and execution of First Central's financial and regulatory accounting shared service function for the group and its subsidiaries, you'll be accountable for the assessment and review of complex accounting as a result of busines changes or regulatory changes, including but not limited to accounting policy, accounting standard and business changes.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have:

  • Completed accountancy ACCA / ACA qualifications

  • Significant leadership of an accounting function within personal lines insurance and / or intermediary market

  • Experience in a group accounting function across multiple tax and regulatory jurisdictions

Job responsibilities:

  • Accountable and recognised expert for the consolidation process of the groups close cycle. Identify and implement changes to improve close process and accommodate business and commercial changes across the group

  • Lead the planning and preparation of the annual statutory and quarterly regulatory reporting obligations of the group. Specifically, the owner of the group’s annual financial statements

  • Review commercial and operational activity (legal substance and form) and considering impacts on the group, and subsidiary financial statements. Evaluating options and recommendations to ensure reporting on business performance is accurately represented for both management and financial statements. Ability to deal with industry complex transactions as the recognised expect within finance.

  • Review and maintain controls in place for the preparation and integrity of the company’s direct and indirect tax returns

  • Assess and recommend options, best practices and assessment of impacts to the board(s) for the group and operating subsidiaries comply with applicable accounting standards considering both internal and external factors.

  • Maintain and design (control) of the groups operating accounting policy

  • Ensure adherence to the group’s wider financial control framework. Ensuring timely and accurate financial record keeping is maintained at all times.

  • Design and maintain second line controls within the FCG accounts through reconciliation and maintaining audit trails to ensure proportionate safeguarding the risk of fraud, error or omission

  • Challenge and recommend changes in accounting approach to ensure higher quality monthly financial reporting and allow better performance insight for the commercial and operating units of the business

  • Support coaching and facilitate professional development of accountants within the financial accounts team

  • Deputize for the Financial Accounting and Reporting Manager

  • Ensure second line financial reconciliation activities are both efficient and effective with FCG

  • Lead on accounting memos assessing business change through accounting procedure and optical impact of the groups and subsidiary financial statements and key financial measures

  • Conduct colleague management duties including:

o Delivering coaching and feedback to direct reports to achieve KPI’s and SLA’s, and conducting regular performance reviews, including probationary reviews and annual appraisals as necessary.

o Deal with all colleague issues including monitoring absence and conducting disciplinaries

o Assist the recruitment process where necessary.

  • Ensure compliance with company and other relevant standards / regulations at all times. Maintain department risk registers (as applicable), providing evidence and commentary for controls, updates for Mitigation Actions and maintaining control matrices and attestations. Also, to ensure that your team are aware of their responsibility to identify and report risk.

Experience & knowledge

  • Significant leadership of an accounting function within personal lines insurance and / or intermediary market

  • Proven post qualified accounting experience preferably in audit manager roles

  • Experience in growing and forming a high-performance team in a faced pace environment

  • Experiencing in building a balanced team, allowing talent growth and operational stability within a professional services environment

  • Experience in a group accounting function across multiple tax and regulatory jurisdictions

  • Qualified accountant ACCA / ACA

  • Insurance accounting, IFRS or UK GAAP

  • Direct and indirect tax

Skills & Qualifications

  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Good time management and organisation skills

  • Strong leadership capabilities with the ability to inspire and coach from senior management to assistant level professionals.

  • Strong commercial awareness considering industry peer group and regulatory factors

  • Proficient in Microsoft applications

  • Strong mathematical, analytical, communication, and organization skills

  • A high level of oral and written communication skills, communicating effectively with senior managers, colleagues, internal and external stakeholders

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to drive process improvement, based upon analysis of data

  • Work effectively under pressure and think clearly and logically in challenging situations
