Data and AI are driving the future of business—but with great potential comes great responsibility we’re looking for an AI & Data Governance Consultant who is passionate about emerging technologies, data integrity, and ethical AI, ensuring that our data and AI strategies are responsible, compliant, and risk-free.   If you thrive at the intersection of technology, governance, and ethics, this is your opportunity to play a key role in shaping AI and data governance frameworks that balance innovation with responsibility.  

As the AI & Data Governance Consultant you’ll champion our groupwide approach for smart and practical data governance at First Central. You'll be the go-to expert, helping our colleagues see data as the treasure it truly is, ensuring we handle it with the utmost care and integrity. You’ll develop and implement robust data and AI governance frameworks to ensure high-quality, secure, and well-managed data across the business and will shape AI governance policies, ensuring AI models are fair, transparent, explainable, and compliant with evolving regulations.  You’ll mitigate risks related to AI and data, including bias, privacy concerns, and regulatory non-compliance and will collaborate with key stakeholders across Technology & Data, Risk & Governance, and other business Pillars to create governance policies that align with business goals.  You’ll play a key role in facilitating regular AI Governance and Innovation Forums to ensure they add business value.  
 

Could you fit the bill? We're big on working flexibly - you'll spend most of your time working from home, with occasional visits to the office.  But of course, it’s your choice - if you prefer to be in the office more - that's good with us too.  Our offices are located in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, Salford Quays, Manchester, and Guernsey it’s your choice – if you live further afield, we’ll accept applications for remote workers! 

Core skills we’re looking for to succeed in the role: 

  • Experience in data governance, AI governance, and regulatory compliance.  
  • Strong understanding of AI ethics, and risk management.  
  • Ability to assess risks related to data integrity, bias, security, and compliance.
  • Experience of data governance tools, AI/ML lifecycle management, and ethical AI principles.  
  • A strategic thinker who can translate governance principles into actionable policies. 
  • Passion for AI’s potential—paired with a commitment to ensuring it’s used responsibly and safely.

What’s involved:

  • You’ll support the delivery of the Data Governance Strategy (including Data Classification, Data Security, Retention, Access Control and monitoring) to enable the achievement of overall business ambitions and outcomes.
  • You’ll work with colleagues across the business to regularly undertake Data Governance maturity assessments.
  • You’ll aid in the identification and mitigation of all key data risks, working effectively with the Data Protection, IT Security, Risk, Data Architecture and Data Management functions.
  • You’ll help to drive a culture of Data Governance by design, effectively engaging and partnering with colleagues across the business, enabling data innovation whilst ensuring auditability.
  • You’ll aid in the facilitation of the Data Governance Council and the production of KPIs, including updates from other key data functions such as data quality and metadata management.
  • You’ll promote a culture of agile working, accountability, continuous improvement and psychological safety within the team and across the business.
  • You’ll identify engaging mechanisms to communicate key Data Governance themes effectively to colleagues across the business.

Experience & knowledge

  • Experience in conducting enterprise-wide maturity assessments.
  • Experience of developing data governance roadmaps, with an evidenced background of effective adoption into business processes.
  • Good understanding of all aspects of data governance, including Data Classification, Data Security, Retention, Access Control, and monitoring.
  • Experience of taking complex information and translating into easily digestible information for less technical colleagues.
  • Experience of building strong mutually beneficial relationships across a business.
  • Experience of supporting cultural change in the way data is used and governed in businesses.
  • Some understanding of Data Quality and Metadata Management capabilities would be advantageous.
  • Experience of General Insurance practices and processes would be advantageous.

  • Effective communication, for example conveying information to diverse audiences in a way that is easily understood and actionable.
  • Creative thinking, for example framing new ways of thinking about data governance to drive adoption.
  • Collaboration, for example driving group discussions to consider and agree current maturity scores with business and technical colleagues.
  • Relationship management, for example creating relationships and building trust with internal and external stakeholders quickly.
  • Storytelling, for example by creating a consistent storyline for better understanding and engaging with data governance topics.
